New Collection arrives at Rio Brazil Belfast.
This contemporary menswear brand launches its new spring-summer collection at Rio Brazil, Belfast. This range encapsulates a top to toe look, from its signature Bakers jacket and loose tapered chinos through to printed long and short sleeve shirts to cargo shorts and embroidered sweatshirts. This season also sees the innovative use of ripstop cotton being used to craft a range of pieces including tapered chinos, an unstructured blazer and shorts, perfect for everyday wear.
When was the brand launched?
Universal works was founded by Mr David Keyte in 2009. The first collection was solely designed by David from his kitchen table with a real desire to make straight forward honest clothing whilst also focusing on the importance of the overall fit and design. This aesthetic is clearly evident in the pared back designs which are rooted in traditional work wear styles.
What is Davids Keyte’s Ethos?
Having worked for large scale fashion companies for most of his working life where most of the production happened offshore, David wanted to create a range of clothing that was produced in small batches and where the whole process could be overseen by him, which of course is great for maintaining quality and high standards. Where possible UK production facilities are used and this sense of ‘local’ is a very important consideration for the brand and its sustainability ethos.
Signature Pieces
The Bakers Jacket
Universal works have designed a number of signature pieces which are now unique to the brand, one of which is the the Bakers jacket, which is instantly recognizable. The detail that sets this piece apart is the work wear shape, large buttons, slanted button hole, inverted right hand chest pocket and ticket pocket. Each season sees this jacket is crafted in different fabrics, for example, tweed for autumn/winter and cotton and linen mixes for spring/summer.
The Pant
These signature trousers offer a loose but tapered fit whilst also staying true to size and are very comfortable and easy to wear. This relaxed styling works perfectly with the looser, boxy shapes of the jackets and shirts. The navy trousers can also be matched up with the navy ripstop blazer seen above.
What is Ripstop Fabric?
The fabric known as “Ripstop” is a woven fabric and offers a strong reinforcement to the garment, which essentially prevents the item from any ripping or tearing. During the weaving process yarns are interwoven at regular intervals in a grid-like pattern. This technique is the perfect solution for any outdoor activity or any manual work, but is now also a fashion statement in its own right.
