Understated Modernity – Oliver Spencer debuts in Rio Brazil

This Spring/Summer 19 will see leading menswear label Oliver Spencer arrive in Rio Brazil for the first time and our shared commitment of following customers rather than trends means we’re very excited to showcase this designer brand in-store!

The brand was founded in 2002 by Oliver Spencer as the casual aside to formal menswear brand Favourbrook, but Spencer’s story as a fashion designer extends back to 1992 and to the more humble surroundings of a London antiques market on Portobello Road, where he sold second-hand clothing from a barrow. Spencer is aware of the importance that this experience played in refining his trade and the significance of this period in shaping Spencer’s philosophy and skill as a designer cannot be understated. The personal value he places on this time is obvious as he describes Portobello Road as his ‘university.’

After spending three years shaping the vision that would inspire his future business, Spencer’s shift into the more glamorised world of fashion arrived when he was afforded the opportunity to work with second hand rolls from a local textile mill and his work would forge the beginnings of his first business Favourbrook. The initial success of the work led to Spencer opening a store on London’s Jermyn Street and in the following year, the brand rose to further prominence with it’s inclusion in the box-office romantic comedy, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The continued success of Favourbrook led to opportunities for expansion and 2002 saw the inception of Oliver Spencer as a casual brand. The brand would follow the same philosophy as it’s sister company, a belief that clothing should be made with premium material and design should be inspired with reference to the modern, chic male.

Oliver Spencer clothing is distinguishable through it’s smart-modern aesthetic and exquisite tailoring rather than gaudy branding, a point Spencer himself takes great pride in. Such an aesthetic is achieved through the use of luxury fabrics which compliment Spencer’s neat designs, and such clothing accommodates the need of the modern man to maintain his style in and out of work hours.

The enduring appeal of Oliver Spencer lies in it’s versatility and production of timeless pieces which assimilate elegance with function, a brand which is truly appropriate for every occasion.
